I'm Doug Brooks, the farmer behind Burnt Hills Farm. We purchased our farm near Seeley's Bay out of a desire to live in the country and grow much of our own food. We believe in sustainability, and thus we chose Gentle on the Land as our motto. It guides our stewardship approach to everything we do on our mixed farm. Our produce: We grow vegetables and fruit, mostly in our 1 acre field. All our produce is organic (although we're not certified). We begin with organic seed, nourish the soil with compost, plant, and then irrigate if we don't get enough rain. Oh yes - and we do lots (!) of hand-weeding and bug picking, since we stay away from synthetic chemicals. We sell our produce at the Kingston West Market, the Gananoque Farmers' Market, and at our farm stand. Our Poultry: We also raise chickens and turkeys. We feed our chickens organic food and the turkeys are conventionally-fed. We raise them on pasture moving them every day to fresh grass. We believe that this fresh-air approach provides a better life for the poultry and improves the flavour of the meat. You can only buy our poultry directly from the farm.
